 Research Outputs

1.     STRATEGIC RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS

The Research and Knowledge Management Unit produce outputs in response to evidence needs of decision-makers and to address knowledge gaps identified in the implementation of the National Development Plan. These reports are undertaken following extensive consultations in order to ensure relevance and usefulness. Commissioned research assignments are outsourced for technical expertise and independent assessments. In-house research and analyses are undertaken using DPME capacity for timely evidence generation.

2.     EVIDENCE MAPS

Evidence Maps (EM) are knowledge management and visualization tools used to scope an existing evidence base and identify knowledge gaps on key policy issues. They are built in DPME using a coproduction model where researchers, sector experts, information specialists and business intelligence are matched between Government and academia in the development of EMs. The 'Systematic Review' methodology guides EM production, using a 7-step synthesis methodology adapted by DPME to ensure a responsive knowledge brokering service and bridge the research-policy interface. EMs enable researchers in DPME to undertake in-house analysis and synthesis in a timely and rigorous manner. Outputs include Rapid Reviews, Evidence Syntheses, Briefs, Case Studies, Technical Reports and other supportive outputs to inform reporting and decision making.

3.     STRATEGIES, RESEARCH GUIDES AND METHODOLOGIES

The DPME Research Unit was established in 2014 and later developed into the Research and Knowledge Management Unit in 2018. Research strategy documents are made available, which guide the conceptualization, approach and implementation of policy relevant research in DPME. Guiding documents on research methodologies, evidence synthesis and other approaches enable a degree of standardization in the process of institutionalizing evidence-use in policy and decision making. The development of a 'research methodology series' is aimed as a resource across Government.

4.     PSPPD - NIDS RESEARCH PAPERS

The Programme to Support Pro-Poor Policy Development (PSPPD) is a European Union-funded research and capacity-building programme located within the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) in the Presidency. Since its launch in 2007, the programme has championed evidence-based policy-making (EBPM), an approach which promotes the use of research and other evidence in policy interventions, to address South Africa's poverty and inequality challenges. Its learning platforms foster the exchange of knowledge among policy-makers and researchers and, together with the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS), a panel study of income dynamics among South Africans, the programme works to provide a comprehensive, qualitatively- and quantitatively-informed evidence base for role players working within the policy framework.
